Abelha Cachaça is a small batch, hand-crafted, artisanal, organic cachaca that comes from Bahia, North East Brasil – a cultural and naturally beautiful region. The distillery is near an old diamond-mining town called Rio de Contas in one of Brasil’s largest national reserves – the Chapada Diamantina. The town is nestled high in the hills of the reserve, at 1,200m altitude, and is the perfect place for growing our organic sugar cane. The temperature differential between day and night means the cane retains large amounts of fresh natural sugar, which is where Abelha gets its unique sweet taste. Our Master Distiller, Marcos Vaccaro, is an expert in all things organic and the distillery is surrounded by fresh waterfalls, 27 different types of organic fruit trees which contributes to Abelha’s distinct aromas. Abelha Cachaca, The Fazenda in Brazil and The Responsible Trading Company is found on the principles of teaching local farmers in the vicinity how to farm organically.

Abelha means bee in portuguese. Bees are social insects that work together to create delicious honey. We are a social enterprise of farmers, Rio de contas locals who help with labelling, distillers and others who come together to make this refined aromatic cachaça. The enterprise goes further when we incorporate the wider business of sales, marketers, business developers, who all contribute and further the ‘Abelha project’ by giving back to the Rio De Contas Community. Abelha connects communities in the farming worldto the the hospitality and bartending world all over the world through this hand-crafted, high quality cachaça.

Why do you care about organic farming techniques?2025-12-17T07:00:21+00:00

It’s always been our underling principles and shared values between the Responsible Trading Company and the Fazenda Vaccaro. We have managed to certify 4 farmers in the local area in becoming organically certified by the IBD (institituo BioDynamico), and we aim to increase this number to 10 within the next decade. It provides a more natural, cleaner, end product that, in turn, doesn’t produce any toxins or impurities in the Cachaca that is being produced with the juice from the organic sugar cane. Plus, most importantly, evidence suggests that if you only drink organic alcohols and don’t mix then it reduces the effects of a hangover the next morning!

Do you have any tips on how to farm organically and/or how to watch out for cleaner, healthier-end products?2025-12-17T07:01:26+00:00

Marcos provides coaching and training out in Brazil so we encourage you to go out to the farm in Rio De Contas to watch, listen and learn on his organic technologies and techniques as they are very useful if you are looking to getting into organic farming. 

Regarding tips on organic produce – I’d always stick to shopping at places such as Wholefoods that have great organic farming colloborations and partnerships all over the world, Planet Organic, and there are always loads of organic deli in most European capital cities.
